State Survey on Coalitions

State Survey Project Overview
CADCA, with the endorsement of NASADAD, (National Association of State Alcohol/Drug Abuse Directors) sought to better understand the relationship between states and coalitions through a structured telephone interview with each state’s NPN (National Prevention Network) representative. A telephone survey was conducted with the District of Columbia and the 50 states. The survey asked how states consider community coalitions in state prevention plans and training models and state perspectives of coalition issues and needs. CADCA would like to thank NASADAD and Lewis Gallant, Executive Director, for endorsement of the survey and Alan Moghul, Director of Prevention, for his review of the survey results and report. CADCA and NASADAD express their appreciation to all NPN representatives for giving valuable time for the interview and sharing their state models and insights into how coalitions and states are connecting. The information increases understanding of the states’ relationships with coalitions.

Strong community coalitions can serve as the link between state level plans and community level implementation. Thirty-three (33) states promote coalitions as a vital contributor to state prevention efforts. Twelve (12) states are promoting broader-based coalitions that address alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on equal footing with a host of other public health issues.
