Types of Funding
Awards:
For example, coalition wins prize for best program and receives a $100,000 award.
Bequests: Nonprofit
named as beneficiary in wills.
Donations: Contributions
(generally small) from individuals or groups, like those solicited by a direct
mail campaign.
Endowments: Funds
or assets of individuals “in trust” for coalition, or transferred
with specific conditions. For example, deed rental property to nonprofit with
condition that income will go to former owner until deceased.
Fee for Service:
Income through payment of all or part of cost of service (i.e. registration
fee for training).
For Profit Business:
Thrift store, ice cream parlor, catering, etc. to support coalition operations.
Gifts: (Restricted
or non-restricted) different types of donations or contributions (generally
from individuals) can be solicited in a variety of ways (pledge drives, “a-thons”,
telethons, bowl-a-thons, walk-a-thons, jail-a-thons).
Grants: Generally
limited term and specific. Can be funding organizations can be government (federal,
state, county, city, etc.), private (foundation or community), or corporate.
In-kind Donations:
Individual or organizational donation of services, time or staff.
Major Gifts: Generally
large amounts for specific one time purposes like purchase of a van or furnishing
a new office.
Memberships: Individuals,
business and/ or organization pay set amount to support coalition. Depending
on structure of organization, members may also have voting power.
Program of Government:
For example, unit of government sets aside portions of its budget and contracts
with or reimburses a coalition to perform the work (i.e. police department pays
directly or indirectly, to coalition to conduct a citizen planning process).
Sale of Products or Services:
Proceeds from the sale of T-shirts, bumper stickers, pins, cookies, coupon books,
etc.
Special Events: Fund
raising and awareness events like golf tournaments, fashion shows, car washes.
Tax set asides: Voters
pass special tax or initiative and dedicate funds to go to coalition activity.
Underwriting or Sponsorships:
Funds given to help defray costs of events or other activities (i.e. conference).
